Module 1: Foundation Certificate Course & Exam (3 days)
The objective of the PRINCE2 Foundation Level Course is to ensure that participants will acquire the skills and knowledge to be able to act as an informed member of a project management team using the PRINCE2 method within a project environment supporting PRINCE2.
The course is of 3 days duration and provides a comprehensive coverage of the key principles and terminology of the PRINCE2 method. The Foundation exam is held at the end of Day 3.
The course will cover the following topics:
1. Introduction to PRINCE2 and Project Management
- Characteristics of project management
- Project and product life cycles
- History of PRINCE2
- Overview of methodology
- Building a business case
- Unique selling points
- Project Management structure
- Benefits of PRINCE2
2. The Eight Components of PRINCE2
- Project Organisation - Establish the Project Organisation with the necessary stakeholders
- Change Control - Ensure that changes within the project are closely controlled
- Configuration Management - Tracking the components of a final product and their versions for release is covered under configuration management
- Quality Control - Establishing a Quality Approach to ensure the customers quality expectations are met
- Risk Management - Ensure that risks are identified, evaluated and suitable management as well as action is taken
- Plans - Creating a consist approach to all levels of planning with a project
- Business Case - Defining the business case which justifies the start up and continuation of the project
- Controls - Establish the control mechanisms to keep the project on track based on the risk, size and complexity of the project
3. The Eight Processes of PRINCE2
Starting a project
- This process ensures that the project is started in a controlled fashion
- Establish the project organisation and gain approval for detailed project planning
Initiating a project
- Establish the project foundations
- Ensure the control mechanisms are in place and the Project Plan is approved
Planning a project
- The planning process will ensure that all planning aspects of the project, at all levels, are consistent and of appropriate detail
Controlling a stage
- The project manager ensures that the project stays on track
- Issue and Risk Management
- Assessing progress and taking corrective action where necessary
- Reporting to the Project Board
Managing Stage Boundaries
- Ensure that at the end of each stage achievements are reviewed and plans created for the next stage
- Gain approval for moving to the next stage
Managing Product Delivery
- Ensures that the team members 'doing the work' have a defined process for accepting, reporting on progress, creating and delivery of products
Directing a project
- The process that describes how the Project Board (Often called a Steering Committee) interacts with a PRINCE2 project
- Decision points and responsibilities are defined
Closing a Project
- A defined approach for closing a project
- Official signoff, handover and identification of follow on actions
Module 2: Practitioner Preparation Course & Exam (2 days)
The PRINCE2 Practitioner Level Course is designed to provide the in-depth knowledge and understanding necessary to ensure you are able to apply PRINCE2 to the running and managing of a project within an environment supporting PRINCE2. To this end, Participants need to exhibit the competence required for the Foundation qualification, and show that they can apply and tune PRINCE2 to address the needs and problems of a specific project scenario.
The course comprises an intensive 2-day format of lectures, workshops and exercises. The Practitioner exam is held at the end of Day 2.
The course will cover the following:
1. Revision of foundation certificate theory
- Components
- Processes
- Techniques
2. Coaching on examination structure and process
3. Complete mock Practitioner exam questions
4. Practical exercises and discussions on how to implement PRINCE2
At the end of the course you will be able to:
- Produce detailed explanations of all processes, components and techniques, and worked examples of all PRINCE2 products as they might be applied to address the particular circumstances of a given project scenario.
- Understand the relationships between processes, components, techniques and PRINCE2 products and apply this understanding.
- Identify the reasons behind the processes, components and techniques of PRINCE2, and understand the principles underpinning these elements.
- Demonstrate an ability to tune PRINCE2 to different project circumstances.
Foundation and Practitioner Certificate Examinations
The PRINCE2 Practitioner course is tailored to meet the requirements of the PRINCE2 Practitioner Certificate qualification as defined by the international examination organisation APMG. The course prepares participants for two exams.
Foundation Certificate is a mandatory pre-requisite to undertake the Practitioners exam and is held on Day 3 of the program:
- Multiple-choice
- One hour duration
- 75 questions
- A score of 50% correct is required to pass
- Closed-book
Practitioner exam is held on Day 5 of the program:
- 9 questions, with a scenario background and appendices.
- Each of the 9 questions is worth 40 marks.
- A score of 50% correct is required to pass
- 3-hour duration.
- Open-book examination (only the PRINCE2 Manual is allowed)
